What is Body-Centered Psychotherapy?

Body-Centered Psychotherapy is …

an umbrella term for therapeutic mental health approaches that acknowledge and incorporate the concept that the mind and body are integrated and thus physical health and mental health are interconnected.

Have you ever had a physical injury and noticed it threw off your mind and emotions? Or experienced emotional pain that resulted in physical pain?

Body-centered psychotherapy rests on the understanding that our minds affect our bodies and our bodies affect our minds. It is sometimes referred to as Somatic Counseling or Somatic Psychotherapy.

Sometimes traditional talk therapy can be useful and sometimes we can get stuck repeating the same story again and again.

Body-centered psychotherapists support clients in utilizing their bodies as resources for self-discovery and healing. This could potentially include exploring physical movements of and in the body, awareness of the body and its sensations, breathing practices, and nervous system regulation.

You might benefit from individual therapy if you are experiencing:

  • Stress, anxiety, and/or depression

  • A lack of self-confidence or self-esteem

  • Grief and loss (of a person, relationship, idea)

  • Challenges with communication and/or emotional expression in relationships

  • Issues regarding self and personal identity

  • Desires to relate with yourself and others more mindfully and effectively

  • Struggles with intimacy and connecting with those you love

  • Difficulty navigating life’s transitions and changes

  • Concerns about career development, choices or finding fulfillment
